Let's get this show started.

00:00:38.268 --> 00:00:42.944
Welcome to the Dollpreneur Podcast.

00:00:42.944 --> 00:00:48.573
I'm your host, georgette Taylor, where we celebrate the creatives, innovators and entrepreneurs shaping the doll industry.

00:00:48.613 --> 00:00:54.732
Today we're talking with Kia and Ricky Davis, the husband and wife team behind Early Affirmation Dolls.

00:00:54.732 --> 00:00:57.584
Their Kaya doll is more than just a toy.

00:00:57.584 --> 00:01:07.859
It's a powerful tool for building confidence and self-esteem in young girls through positive affirmations, which I absolutely love, and self-esteem in young girls through positive affirmations, which I absolutely love.

00:01:07.859 --> 00:01:11.013
So we're going to dive into their journey, the inspiration behind their brand and how they're making an impact, one dollar at a time.

00:01:11.013 --> 00:01:14.930
Thank you so much, kia and Ricky, for being on the Dollpreneur Podcast.

00:01:14.930 --> 00:01:16.283
I'm so excited to have you here.

00:01:16.283 --> 00:01:18.067
You're very welcome.

00:01:18.067 --> 00:01:19.150
Thanks for having us.

00:01:19.150 --> 00:01:20.293
You're so welcome.

00:01:20.293 --> 00:01:22.043
So I'm going to ask you, kia.

00:01:22.043 --> 00:01:25.091
I love the mission behind the early affirmation dolls.

00:01:25.091 --> 00:01:26.304
I love affirmations.

00:01:26.304 --> 00:01:27.328
I use them all the time.

00:01:27.328 --> 00:01:30.811
I even created like positive word cards for affirmations.

00:01:30.811 --> 00:01:33.067
So I'm very much into that space.

00:01:33.067 --> 00:01:43.331
But I want you to tell me the moment when you first realized that your daughter's affirmations, you know, could become something bigger, and what inspired you to turn that into a business.

00:01:48.420 --> 00:01:50.510
We started out with our daughter doing affirmations and she was a baby, couldn't talk or anything.

00:01:50.510 --> 00:01:57.391
We would just stand in the mirror and say the four affirmations and we call those now the core four affirmations that we have in our doll.

00:01:57.391 --> 00:01:58.361
One day.

00:01:58.361 --> 00:02:03.621
One of us we don't know which one of us really came up with it we were like more kids need to hear this.

00:02:03.621 --> 00:02:04.823
We don't know which one of us really came up with it.

00:02:04.823 --> 00:02:11.674
We were like more kids need to hear this and at the time we were like okay, but we didn't have like any of the logistics kind of.

00:02:11.674 --> 00:02:21.800
It was just very much like okay, we know that more kids need to hear this, but so my mother in love passed in 2020.

00:02:22.942 --> 00:02:24.163
And thank you.

00:02:24.163 --> 00:02:26.209
With that hurt, we yeah it.

00:02:26.209 --> 00:02:32.207
It caused us like a tremendous hurt but we were like determined to turn our pain into purpose.

00:02:32.207 --> 00:02:38.207
So one of the things that she loved to do with our daughter was learning through play.

00:02:38.207 --> 00:02:44.610
Specifically, she had like this little Dora doll and the two of them would just be so happy just playing.

00:02:44.610 --> 00:02:59.298
So we kind of we were like, okay, so we we love the affirmations and we have been saying it with our daughter and, um, because we wanted to honor her legacy, them two and their doll play really inspired it.

00:02:59.298 --> 00:03:06.770
So we kind of just did a mash-up and so, um, there was Kaya was born, an affirmation doll.

00:03:07.372 --> 00:03:07.812
Nice.

00:03:07.812 --> 00:03:13.330
I love, I love that idea of bringing the doll and the and the play that your mother-in-law did with her.

00:03:13.330 --> 00:03:24.689
Because, you know, I I had an amazing mother-in-law and she, she just blessed me with such a great opportunity to see that mother-in-laws can be just as beautiful and sweet as as having a mom.

00:03:24.689 --> 00:03:29.849
You know, she was really like my second mom, so I'm sure she's just thrilled that you honored her in that way.

00:03:29.849 --> 00:03:30.170
You know.

00:03:30.170 --> 00:03:36.052
So, ricky, as Kia's husband and business partner, what was your initial reaction when she bought?

00:03:36.052 --> 00:03:40.290
Oh, I guess probably when you both thought about bringing the idea of creating Affirmation Dolls.

00:03:40.290 --> 00:03:44.004
And how did you decide to go all in and make this a joint venture with her?

00:03:44.444 --> 00:03:53.336
Yeah, so, like she said, just saying the affirmations to our daughter, kyla, every day, it was just powerful.

00:03:53.336 --> 00:04:09.151
And we know, with everything going on in society you see all the bullying and it's all on social media, bullying now, body shame and all types of stuff so that's kind of encouraged us to start early with the affirmations.

00:04:09.151 --> 00:04:22.766
But making it a joint venture and making it a product is, you know, just trying to impact, you know, all these young girls, because they need to hear that as early as possible, and not just young girls, but young boys.

00:04:22.766 --> 00:04:30.480
Yes, so that's something we want to do in the future, but it started out because we got the, the young daughter, and we had the great idea with the doll.

00:04:30.480 --> 00:04:34.269
Uh, it was just, it was kind of built out of necessity.

00:04:34.269 --> 00:04:45.067
And you know, one of our things we like to do we want to bring positivity to the world and you know we want to impact our community in a in a positive light.

00:04:46.040 --> 00:04:48.228
Yeah, well, that's great that you guys are doing that together.

00:04:48.228 --> 00:04:50.988
I think that really helps, too, when your children look at you.

00:04:50.988 --> 00:04:56.660
You know being able to do a business together, and also a business that is there to help create better self-esteem.

00:04:56.660 --> 00:05:09.312
You know, and as well as I do, that creating that type of foundation for a child is so important, because it really helps to shape how they see themselves in the world yes, you know and how powerful they are in the world.

00:05:09.653 --> 00:05:12.064
Um so I know you said you started with four affirmations.

00:05:12.064 --> 00:05:17.822
Did you include any more than four and how did you choose which affirmations to use in the doll?

00:05:18.723 --> 00:05:25.894
yes, so the core four are the exact same that we had, and so we didn't add anymore.

00:05:25.894 --> 00:05:36.665
Okay, it will be interesting to see, like, what the future holds especially with, like AI and just like different cool things and insights that can be given there.

00:05:36.665 --> 00:05:44.850
And so all the affirmations I'm beautiful, just like we make sure, and it's a door to open conversation.

00:05:44.850 --> 00:05:50.834
If a little girl may not know, mommy, what is beautiful, mean then you get the opportunity to explain it.

00:05:50.834 --> 00:05:55.045
That's the first one I'm strong, which we're strong.

00:05:55.045 --> 00:05:59.541
Yes, right, I'm smart, because you want them to believe that they are smart, right.

00:05:59.541 --> 00:06:02.247
The last one I'm going to change the world.

00:06:02.247 --> 00:06:04.471
And that's my favorite.

00:06:04.471 --> 00:06:07.562
That's the one that Kaya has on.

00:06:07.562 --> 00:06:17.346
It says I'm going to change the world, and so I always just talk about, like you know, sometimes the world may seem big to some people.

00:06:17.346 --> 00:06:24.430
It's like you change your part of the world, do what you're supposed to do, you know, with whatever your world looks like.

00:06:24.752 --> 00:06:25.353
That's so true.

00:06:25.841 --> 00:06:29.091
Just looks like your family, then you know, change that.

00:06:29.091 --> 00:06:30.846
And I think from another question.

00:06:30.846 --> 00:06:38.187
I think that I feel like self-esteem should be included in like school and me and my husband were just talking about this.

00:06:38.187 --> 00:06:41.548
I'm like that can stop you from doing a lot of stuff.

00:06:41.569 --> 00:07:01.264
It really can Believe in yourself, like you can be the smartest person on the planet, but your mouth and if you don't know if you like you know, because it's true, if you don't believe in yourself, it doesn't matter you know how much book intelligence you have, or anything like that, but if you don't believe in yourself, you're never going to show that side of you.

00:07:01.264 --> 00:07:08.487
And unfortunately, there's still adults that don't believe in themselves enough to make changes in their own lives.

00:07:08.487 --> 00:07:12.485
So I think being able to establish that when they're young is just so important.

00:07:12.485 --> 00:07:14.747
It's really so powerful to be able to do for them.

00:07:14.747 --> 00:07:23.470
So when you thought about creating a doll, had you ever created anything like that before and if not, what was your first steps to getting that done?

00:07:24.199 --> 00:07:29.586
So I have never in my life completed anything like that, have you?

00:07:29.805 --> 00:07:30.107
No.

00:07:30.927 --> 00:07:37.846
Okay, I've played with a lot of dolls, I've cut their hair, I've done a script, but I've never created.

00:07:37.846 --> 00:07:42.122
So the first thing was we just started looking at production companies.

00:07:42.122 --> 00:07:47.283
We wanted to do a production company that was, uh, in the united states.

00:07:47.283 --> 00:07:52.213
Oh, we were able to get that, but then it, you know, it's outsourced.

00:07:52.213 --> 00:08:04.047
Um, we just researched some production companies, set up a few meetings and, okay, I we were able to tell her them like, well, I want her to have two ponytails, I want them to have those, I want to.

00:08:04.168 --> 00:08:10.860
you know, that stuff was very fun for me, yeah I give her the, I give her the credit for doing those.

00:08:10.860 --> 00:08:19.744
Researching and product development companies then kind of landed on one and it was just very interesting to create something from scratch.

00:08:19.744 --> 00:08:28.266
Yes, everything about the dog we had input on like from the smallest of the features, even the voice box.

00:08:28.266 --> 00:08:32.471
My daughter couldn't talk at the time we created the dog.

00:08:32.471 --> 00:08:34.265
She couldn't talk clearly.

00:08:34.265 --> 00:08:41.173
So one of our friends' daughters is the voice behind the voice box.

00:08:41.173 --> 00:08:45.708
So everything about the dog is just you know we are special.

00:08:45.769 --> 00:08:47.451
Yeah, that is.

00:08:47.451 --> 00:08:48.053
That is so cool.

00:08:48.053 --> 00:08:51.349
I was literally going to ask you about that, about the technology behind the.

00:08:51.349 --> 00:08:57.222
You know the, the voice box, and you know what are the challenges that you had to overcome to get that right.

00:08:57.222 --> 00:09:03.344
Or did you get it to sound the way you want it to, even though friend's daughter did the voice with this changes that you needed to make?

00:09:04.005 --> 00:09:06.129
I just think it's been a learning process.

00:09:06.129 --> 00:09:07.892
I can't say that.

00:09:07.892 --> 00:09:12.225
When you said that, like you know, yes, it has been a lot.

00:09:12.225 --> 00:09:15.291
So no, a lot.

00:09:15.331 --> 00:09:28.051
I want you to share that because, you know, listen to this show because not just because they want to see doll makers, but they also, you know, want to get a glimpse into what it, what it, what it takes to bring something, like you said, from idea to you know, to production.

00:09:28.611 --> 00:09:31.201
Yeah, so those that good old voice box.

00:09:31.201 --> 00:09:36.419
So we knew that like it had to be included right, like there's no way we couldn't do it.

00:09:36.419 --> 00:09:39.566
So I don't know, they have like a little.

00:09:39.566 --> 00:09:42.751
It's an activation, like how you activate it all.

00:09:42.751 --> 00:09:45.777
Number one it's on the bottom of the box.

00:09:45.777 --> 00:09:57.486
It's very small, so we had to make sure that we made it visible on our website and we made sure they get the instructions when it's delivered but, that's one thing.

00:09:57.907 --> 00:10:08.985
I do think that next time I think I'll probably print the paper out and just so I can see everything visually right, right, um, so learning little things like that.

00:10:08.985 --> 00:10:16.063
Um, and with the doll having a battery in her, I think that they, they have it where it.

00:10:16.063 --> 00:10:25.830
You pull out that little tab and then it activates but there was some um dolls that needed a battery replacement.

00:10:25.890 --> 00:10:26.171
Right.

00:10:26.331 --> 00:10:28.888
Okay, so just different things like that.

00:10:28.888 --> 00:10:34.799
Although it was a no-brainer, like we had to have it, it's kind of been a challenge.

00:10:35.360 --> 00:10:44.440
You talk about during the development phase, like we had them, like, say, the four affirmations, but when we listened to it it didn't sound right.

00:10:44.440 --> 00:10:48.505
So like when we kind of had our daughter do it but that didn't sound right.

00:10:48.505 --> 00:10:51.460
So that kind of landed on getting an older girl.

00:10:51.460 --> 00:11:04.950
So multiple drafts to get the final version, whether it's voice box and as well as the clothing, the way the doll looked Like, the first few drafts of how the doll's face was.

00:11:04.950 --> 00:11:12.328
I'll just say it wasn't up to our standard going through that process.

00:11:12.429 --> 00:11:15.442
You know, that's the beauty of owning it like.

00:11:15.442 --> 00:11:17.789
Don't be satisfied with what they give you.

00:11:17.910 --> 00:11:20.806
Yeah that's so important.

00:11:20.826 --> 00:11:22.087
Yeah, thank you for sharing that.

00:11:22.087 --> 00:11:24.927
It's gonna be your name on the product, so get it how you want it to be.

00:11:24.927 --> 00:11:25.394
Yeah, yeah, that's so important.

00:11:25.394 --> 00:11:25.475
Thank.

00:11:25.475 --> 00:11:26.179
Yeah, thank you for sharing that.

00:11:26.179 --> 00:11:26.938
It's going to be your name on a product, so get it how you want it to be.

00:11:27.259 --> 00:11:28.946
Yeah, yeah, that's so important.

00:11:28.946 --> 00:11:38.086
Thank you for saying that, because I think a lot of times people who get into that, you know, they may do have a little bit of fear because they go to a company and they figure the company knows everything Right so.

00:11:38.086 --> 00:11:48.336
But it's not about that, it's about what you want to create and what you want to bring forward, and if that company doesn't fit with your idea, you know, then you may have to look for something else.

00:11:48.336 --> 00:11:53.441
But it seems like you know the company that you found eventually you know was you were able to work with and get the production out of that.

00:11:53.441 --> 00:11:58.633
So did you have a small run or did you have to do, like you know, four or $5,000?

00:11:59.260 --> 00:12:01.245
Oh yeah, that's going to sound really small.

00:12:01.245 --> 00:12:09.490
I know that sounded big to us, cause I mean we going to sound really small I know that sounded big to us because I mean, we've never done anything like this.

00:12:09.490 --> 00:12:11.655
So, um, the minimum order was a thousand dollars.

00:12:11.655 --> 00:12:12.298
Oh, that's wonderful.

00:12:12.298 --> 00:12:12.778
Yeah, is it?

00:12:12.778 --> 00:12:13.240
Yeah, no, it is.

00:12:13.279 --> 00:12:16.807
That's wonderful usually you have to do a lot more.

00:12:16.807 --> 00:12:21.143
So, yes, but you know, at the time we were all like just self-funded.

00:12:21.143 --> 00:12:30.631
I wish you kind of would have looked at talking to a bank you know rather than getting a loans business on, you know, purchasing the thousand dollars.

00:12:30.631 --> 00:12:32.264
You know it was a lot for us.

00:12:32.264 --> 00:12:32.827
Yeah.

00:12:32.827 --> 00:12:36.923
Yeah, in hindsight, you would have did things a little bit different.

00:12:37.144 --> 00:12:37.967
I understand that.

00:12:37.967 --> 00:12:44.673
I mean, yeah, you know, having that upfront money can definitely be a challenge when you are bootstrapping it, as they say.

00:12:44.673 --> 00:13:05.594
You know pretty much, but I think that that's one of the challenges of us creating dolls right, it is the fact that it does cost so much money to do that and you have to figure out different ways to process those costs and see what works best for you and your family or, you know, you and the business in general.

00:13:05.594 --> 00:13:07.567
So thank you for sharing that.

00:13:07.567 --> 00:13:13.133
What other complications or challenges did you have when it came to manufacturing and product development?

00:13:14.639 --> 00:13:16.621
I would say the skin complexion.

00:13:16.621 --> 00:13:22.955
So when I selected it it didn't look like what they gave me back.

00:13:22.955 --> 00:13:30.749
I was like she looks no offense, she looks borderline white, right, right, like I want the doll to look.

00:13:30.749 --> 00:13:40.018
I want my daughter to be able to see herself in the doll and it's not to say that a Caucasian doll won't be made in the future.

00:13:40.018 --> 00:14:01.668
But because I am who I am and my daughter who she is, I want to create that disability because, to be honest, like there's not even a lot of representation when you walk through the aisles of a wild water target or whatever, right right um, so yeah yeah, yeah, I would definitely say that she looked like michael jackson.

00:14:03.511 --> 00:14:09.471
It was not funny at the time, I probably could have cried, but that is one thing that we look back on.

00:14:09.471 --> 00:14:17.995
When we look at the picture, like all we can do is laugh like, and so you know, I think it.

00:14:17.995 --> 00:14:19.057
Just with that.

00:14:19.538 --> 00:14:26.298
I thought that the sample looked darker than when you got it right, yeah, yeah.

00:14:26.298 --> 00:14:35.370
So the challenges is colors and I know, speaking with other doll creators, it's the hair usually too, especially if they're doing something that's more of a natural type of hair.

00:14:35.370 --> 00:14:35.692
It's.

00:14:35.692 --> 00:14:39.410
You know, they've been having a lot of challenges with hair and definitely skin tones.

00:14:39.410 --> 00:14:49.618
You know, um, and you would think that a lot of these companies now get a lot of people who are who-American who want to make dolls, that they would already have an idea of what we look like.

00:14:49.618 --> 00:14:50.360
You know what I mean?

00:14:50.360 --> 00:15:07.251
I would think that, but it's interesting you're still having those issues of what kind of colors they want to send back to you as acceptable, and I appreciate you standing up and saying, no, that's not how I want this doll to look at the end of the day, the pushback is very important.

00:15:07.404 --> 00:15:10.033
The first few drafts is like no, this is not it.

00:15:10.033 --> 00:15:12.352
That's not the image we're trying to portray.

00:15:12.352 --> 00:15:15.794
Now we have a beautiful doll, but it wasn't the start.

00:15:17.546 --> 00:15:18.409
Got to push back.

00:15:18.409 --> 00:15:21.414
How many variations did you have of the doll?

00:15:21.414 --> 00:15:28.505
I think probably five, wow yeah.

00:15:28.505 --> 00:15:31.594
Think probably five, wow yeah probably five and each.

00:15:31.614 --> 00:15:32.697
Now, each variation costs money, doesn't it?

00:15:32.697 --> 00:15:34.501
So at first we was like doing sketches and stuff.

00:15:34.501 --> 00:15:35.524
Okay, uh, as far as like.

00:15:35.524 --> 00:15:40.875
When we got the first prototype, by the time we got an actual doll in our hand.

00:15:40.875 --> 00:15:42.238
It was.

00:15:42.238 --> 00:15:47.465
That was one was good, so they did one, but it was not up to our standard.

00:15:47.705 --> 00:15:57.755
Then the next was good and that's the one that got shipped to us yeah, they kind of was doing like um one change at the time and then we would have to like okay it and move forward.

00:15:57.755 --> 00:16:28.139
They went from like pencil to color to like everything, kind of building upon the little minor things happening during that time, and I think that they they were um understanding and they knew that this was something that was new to us, but not in the in the sense of like they were trying to get over anything right being knowledgeable and being you know, given what they thought was the best direction, based on the clients that they serve.

00:16:28.445 --> 00:16:29.206
OK, all right.

00:16:29.206 --> 00:16:29.988
Well, that's good, though.

00:16:29.988 --> 00:16:36.340
I mean it seems like overall you had a pretty good manufacturing company, that you found somebody that was really good and worked with you really well.

00:16:36.340 --> 00:16:37.768
That means everything.

00:16:37.768 --> 00:16:41.136
When you're producing a doll, you have to have a company that you can work with.

00:16:41.136 --> 00:16:45.572
It's great that they provide you feedback, but that they also listen to your feedback.

00:16:45.572 --> 00:16:55.013
And I know we were talking you were talking earlier when you were talking about getting the doll back and it wasn't the color that you wanted and you were saying how important it is to have something that looked like your daughter.

00:16:55.013 --> 00:17:03.638
So why do you think it's so important for children, especially young black girls right To see dolls that look like them and to you know that affirms their worth.

00:17:03.638 --> 00:17:14.336
Not saying that just because you have a doll that you're not worthy or are worthy, but just the fact that there's a doll that says, hey, I'm important too and I have a place in this space, in the doll community.

00:17:14.986 --> 00:17:30.817
Honestly, I think it means everything because, like we had talked about before, like self-esteem and confidence, if you don't have that, that will close so many doors for you and you can, you know, you can be the next big thing, in whatever field it is.

00:17:30.817 --> 00:17:40.539
I mean you could be a doctor, like, but if you don't have the confidence and you don't have a self-esteem first, like who wants a doctor that doesn't even believe in themselves?

00:17:40.539 --> 00:17:41.609
So how can you treat me?

00:17:41.609 --> 00:17:46.730
Where are we going to even come up with a, a care plan here?

00:17:46.730 --> 00:18:00.707
And you're just like, uh, well, I don't know, like I don't want to step on your toes, like I think it is so, so, so important because even though it seems like something small, you learn so much.

00:18:00.747 --> 00:18:02.670
Playing with dolls, you really do.

00:18:02.670 --> 00:18:19.845
And to just be able to walk in the store and see, like man, I even like that the bigger companies, they even the um Barbies are starting to have like thicker legs and stuff like that, because like that's really how we look, yeah, and it's important.

00:18:19.845 --> 00:18:34.574
But I don't think in the African-American community that we don't like go after our dreams or we don't have as many people that saying like, ok, if that's what you want to do, do it, and people that you can look up to.

00:18:34.574 --> 00:18:47.747
So I think that it's very, very important that they see themselves in the dog that we create, because then they're like, okay, well, if she can do that, then I can do that.

00:18:47.907 --> 00:18:57.026
You know what I mean Exactly, and I think what you were saying too, is the fact that dolls are a very important part of a young child's life, whether it's a boy or girl.

00:18:57.026 --> 00:19:14.867
I've had many people on my prior show and this show just because they're male doesn't mean that they don't play with dolls either, and I think that's a stigma that people have, because I think it is allows them to have creativity, allows them to be able to have something to talk to and interact with, feel safe around sometimes.

00:19:14.867 --> 00:19:15.869
I think that's so important.

00:19:15.869 --> 00:19:33.894
So so, speaking on that point of Ricky, I know you have a daughter and I know you know it's important for girls to play, play with dolls and do you have any kind of ideas of, I mean, young boys having dolls or having, you know, having boy dolls as well, and how do you uh feel that uh dolls can help you, whether you're a young?

00:19:33.933 --> 00:19:34.715
boy or a girl.

00:19:34.715 --> 00:19:36.827
Yeah, I think it's real key.

00:19:36.827 --> 00:19:43.826
I think, uh, I know me growing up, you know I had, like you know, the action figures right, you know, just have.

00:19:43.826 --> 00:20:01.531
I just just watching my daughter and daughter and knowing what a lot of kids do, the creativity, the imagination, just playing with a dog, what that does to a kid and just helps build them, I think it's just amazing the conversations that she'll be having.

00:20:01.531 --> 00:20:03.617
I'll just be kind of listening.

00:20:04.468 --> 00:20:13.471
I can't believe she thinking about that because she picked up everything like I'm saying to her uh siblings, the dog will be doing the same thing.

00:20:13.471 --> 00:20:17.262
So so circling that back around with.

00:20:17.262 --> 00:20:26.480
You know, boys, like growing up when I had, you know, my uh toys, I played play with my action figures, my everything that I'm seeing in the world.

00:20:26.480 --> 00:20:30.355
You know, I'm incorporating that in my little imaginative play.

00:20:32.153 --> 00:20:33.644
Yeah, I think it's important.

00:20:33.644 --> 00:20:51.965
I think, like you said, it allows them to be creative regardless of you know what gender they are, To be able to make that connection and find something within a doll or plush doll or action figure that that serves them and it can help them to be creative and be more confident who they are, you know.

00:20:51.986 --> 00:20:56.516
so everybody asks us like a product for males, like that's definitely.

00:20:56.516 --> 00:21:01.031
That's the next thing, because we also have three sons as well.

00:21:01.031 --> 00:21:10.053
They are older, but it's just amazing to see, like different kids that even live in the same house, how different they can be.

00:21:10.053 --> 00:21:22.307
We have one like overly confident kid and then one is like it's not confident at all, so I wish I can like disperse it um, but it's, it's just key it really is key.

00:21:22.789 --> 00:21:30.955
Um, so, now that you have the doll, you created this beautiful doll let's talk a little bit about marketing and how do you reach your audience right.

00:21:30.955 --> 00:21:38.896
How have you been able to get the word out about your dolls and a couple, I guess, marketing strategies that you have used that you felt were effective in reaching parents about what you do?

00:21:40.086 --> 00:21:41.491
That marketing, I went whoo.

00:21:41.924 --> 00:21:46.125
I think that's the thing that we uh struggle, that we struggle with the most.

00:21:46.125 --> 00:21:50.734
You know, brand awareness, that's things that we we got to get a lot better at.

00:21:50.795 --> 00:22:00.366
You know, we've done a lot of different things we had two commercials, uh, okay, by local in our local cincinnati area.

00:22:01.167 --> 00:22:02.509
Uh, we've done commercials.

00:22:02.911 --> 00:22:12.193
Uh, we did like faces, yeah, we have done whose appearances um the facebook ads have done um.

00:22:12.193 --> 00:22:12.815
Um.

00:22:12.815 --> 00:22:21.275
We did some ad, ran some ads on walmart, because our style is also on walmartcom, so we did some walmart ads.

00:22:21.275 --> 00:22:23.058
It was just a lot of different things.

00:22:23.058 --> 00:22:26.867
We I went to an entrepreneurship school here in Cincinnati.

00:22:27.388 --> 00:22:43.354
And so they provide like a lot of opportunities, and so another thing that we also tried for marketing was we got some students that were about to graduate and so they, like took over our social media accounts for 30 days or something.

00:22:43.354 --> 00:22:43.855
So that was.

00:22:43.855 --> 00:22:45.238
You know, that was cool.

00:22:45.238 --> 00:22:47.229
I feel like we've done a lot.

00:22:47.229 --> 00:22:55.468
I feel as if I have taken so many marketing classes, but that's just not God's like.

00:22:55.468 --> 00:23:01.558
I don't think he wants me in that space, but for right now I have to be in it, like.

00:23:01.558 --> 00:23:04.490
So, like my husband said, like we just have to get better.

00:23:04.490 --> 00:23:16.184
It's just one of those things that you just have to get better, and, even though I don't understand it, I'm always seeking classes that teach something new, because I already feel like I'm behind.

00:23:16.184 --> 00:23:18.133
So I definitely don't want to get behind.

00:23:18.133 --> 00:23:21.365
I'm not going to stop just because Well, that's great, I mean.

00:23:21.685 --> 00:23:26.355
I'm glad you said that, because I think I think anything, no matter what you learn, it's always a process.

00:23:26.355 --> 00:23:28.039
Right, you can learn it, you do it.

00:23:28.039 --> 00:23:29.807
That doesn't work and you do something else.

00:23:29.807 --> 00:23:34.388
It's always about pivoting and it's always about changing and especially being an entrepreneur.

00:23:34.388 --> 00:23:46.646
Right, and especially in the dog community, because there are a lot of different ways that you can market your product, a lot of different avenues that you can go about to be able to share what it is that you have.

00:23:46.646 --> 00:23:48.152
But I think you need to find a niche.

00:23:48.152 --> 00:23:50.247
Not just find a niche, but at least find one or two.

00:23:50.247 --> 00:23:54.076
That's really comfortable, that you like doing, because there's so many different ways.

00:23:54.076 --> 00:23:59.367
You don't want to get lost in that process either, because then you become so overwhelmed that you can't really move forward.

00:23:59.428 --> 00:24:01.109
You can become overwhelmed by trying to learn so much.

00:24:01.109 --> 00:24:07.839
You can become overwhelmed by trying to learn so much, and it's just like you know it's about building, building a community.

00:24:07.920 --> 00:24:15.042
You know it's so funny because I just think back to when me and my my me and my friend Audrey created a plus size fashion dolls.

00:24:15.042 --> 00:24:20.017
I know you were talking about dolls with different sizes, but we created a plus size doll 20 something years ago.

00:24:20.017 --> 00:24:23.474
Basically, all we got was why does, why does anybody want a fat doll?

00:24:23.474 --> 00:24:24.488
That's what they would say to us.

00:24:24.488 --> 00:24:31.252
You know, if we'd be like oh my gosh, like okay, first of all, they're plus size and second of all, they are plus size people.

00:24:31.574 --> 00:24:31.835
Okay.

00:24:31.994 --> 00:24:33.160
So you know.

00:24:33.160 --> 00:24:39.968
So I understand the challenges of doing something different and showcasing something different to the world, but it was so much more simpler than like.

00:24:39.968 --> 00:24:42.653
We put it on a website and we talked to everybody.

00:24:42.653 --> 00:24:45.318
That was pretty much all we had back in 2000.

00:24:45.318 --> 00:24:48.839
You know, now there's so many ways to market and so many things.

00:24:48.839 --> 00:24:49.884
You can get overwhelmed.

00:24:49.884 --> 00:24:59.194
So I would just this is just my feedback, you know, and I'm sure people who are watching the show will have their own feedback Just pick two lanes for yourself to make it more streamlined for you.

00:24:59.194 --> 00:25:16.424
As long as you build a community and hopefully by you being on the Dockburn of Black Cache, people will find out about you and find out more about what it is that you're doing with your dolls, and that's really what I want to have happen for you and for all the other dog creators that I speak to.

00:25:16.424 --> 00:25:17.607
So I know marketing is challenging.

00:25:17.607 --> 00:25:23.542
What other challenges have you had as entrepreneurs and what's been the most, I guess, the most difficult part of launching your business and growing the dolls?

00:25:23.963 --> 00:25:24.345
You want to go?

00:25:24.345 --> 00:25:29.794
I'll think, unless you take my answer.

00:25:30.506 --> 00:25:33.234
The thing is like getting our brand out there.

00:25:33.234 --> 00:25:36.660
We're a hundred percent self-funded, you know.

00:25:36.660 --> 00:25:39.074
So I think we would have did things a lot different.

00:25:39.074 --> 00:25:53.896
Look at some other avenues financially, cause it kind of know, strap you, we can't invest into some things that we would like to, you know, just use our own money all the time right.

00:25:54.038 --> 00:26:00.037
Right, that was one big takeaway, like we should have kind of did things a little bit differently.

00:26:00.037 --> 00:26:10.013
And then just just the entrepreneur training classes we've taken over the past couple years like that would have been, we would have got on that earlier.

00:26:10.013 --> 00:26:23.855
Uh, we learned so much doing these different boot camps and stuff and you know, seeing how people have, you know they didn't do things right in the in the beginning, but they learned so much and they're giving that feedback to us.

00:26:23.855 --> 00:26:44.816
We can't wait to be able to, you know, help other people come up the same way, because it has been a struggle on our entrepreneurship journey but I mean we're better for it because we learned so much and we got knowledge to help other people yeah, and also not I feel like motivation.

00:26:45.215 --> 00:27:00.069
Sometimes you do need like a little bit of light to be shined right, because we are self-funded and the money that we use as self-funded came from my mother-in-law and what she had left behind for him.

00:27:00.069 --> 00:27:18.935
So I just feel like, for me personally, it makes me like lock in, like Kia, you have to do this, like some days it's like I don't know how, but literally like I have all these, these bible things on the back of my phone and just being like lord, what is my lane?

00:27:18.935 --> 00:27:21.608
Like I'm sorry, I'm spiritual, like what is it?

00:27:21.608 --> 00:27:21.990
I?

00:27:21.990 --> 00:27:30.361
I, because I'm struggling here and I am very transparent.

00:27:30.644 --> 00:27:41.556
So, yes, marketing is one of those things that have definitely been a struggle for us and a struggle that we are working to overcome, but I would be lying if I said that it was not.

00:27:41.556 --> 00:27:51.272
I'm a mom too, so I do still have time that I want to spend with my kids that are not like oh, let me put this camera up right here.

00:27:51.272 --> 00:28:02.569
So people are like, just just let them see what you're doing and they I'm like that's just not natural for me if I'm struggling to put up a post every day or a couple times a day.

00:28:02.650 --> 00:28:06.115
I wouldn't be like, oh no.

00:28:07.497 --> 00:28:08.999
Fortunately, right.

00:28:08.999 --> 00:28:16.378
You have to be able to create the type of business you want to create for yourself in that sense, Right?

00:28:16.378 --> 00:28:31.147
Unfortunately, doing things outside of your comfort zone is part of being an entrepreneur at the end of the day, you know and you guys know that already right, Cause I'm sure getting into this space was not like, oh yeah, I'm just going to, let's, let's make a doll, right?

00:28:31.147 --> 00:28:36.125
You see the type of things that you need to do to create a doll.

00:28:36.125 --> 00:28:38.449
It's not just like, oh, I have a doll, I have an idea.

00:28:38.449 --> 00:28:43.136
There's so many other things that you have to learn in the process of doing that.

00:28:43.336 --> 00:28:46.949
So it is kind of a fickle kind of place to be as entrepreneurs.

00:28:46.949 --> 00:28:57.134
Like you know, you don't want to put everything out there, but at the same time, you need to put enough out there so people know who you are and get a sense of you and your dream and your vision and your goal.

00:28:57.134 --> 00:29:03.993
So I definitely understand, I understand being in the you know crux of that as an entrepreneur.

00:29:03.993 --> 00:29:05.257
But you guys are doing great.

00:29:05.257 --> 00:29:12.571
I mean, you guys are doing amazing, and you had a vision and you brought it to life and I think that's really, I think that is the biggest.

00:29:12.571 --> 00:29:15.018
The hardest hurdle is bringing it to life.

00:29:15.018 --> 00:29:22.778
Now you just got to tweak things along the way and figure out what fits for you and pick your lane and just drive that home.

00:29:22.778 --> 00:29:30.603
So since you've been through this, how do you feel the impact that this has on your children, seeing you guys do this?

00:29:31.305 --> 00:30:01.509
I think for me, just with our boys, you know, because they're our boys, are all teenagers and you know, just kind of showing them that you know it's different avenues to you know, follow your dreams, like you know, because my whole life I always work for somebody else and I'm still working for somebody else I right, I got the business and you're just showing them like, if it's something that you want to do, you can build your own company and it's going to be as successful as you make it.

00:30:01.901 --> 00:30:10.086
So you know our oldest son, you know he has his own clothing business and I like to think that some of that is driven by.

00:30:10.086 --> 00:30:20.630
You know you see us start our own thing, driven by you know you see us start our own thing and you know we've got a product from our minds to out on the website or store shelves.

00:30:20.630 --> 00:30:23.757
You know just motivating them that there's other ways to.

00:30:23.900 --> 00:30:36.776
You know, get to where you want to get in life and for our daughter, um, I mean just, she's really at that age because she's six, so she is our ideal customer.

00:30:36.776 --> 00:30:48.050
However, she's also the ideal six-year-old, so she wants everything, and so she probably can't figure out, like, why are y'all so stuck on this dog?

00:30:48.050 --> 00:30:53.692
We try to like, but that's like we go to the store and we're still buying dogs.

00:30:53.692 --> 00:31:06.068
So like the effect on her is like I don't know, we're just trying to raise her up in the voice too, to be just good humans yes, at the end of the day, I want you to be.

00:31:06.410 --> 00:31:12.665
Oh my goodness, be good, do good, that's right those around you, you know impactful like so.

00:31:12.665 --> 00:31:23.039
Just different things like that, and even how the business have gotten us different opportunities to be able to speak and go places.

00:31:23.039 --> 00:31:40.730
I think just having the ability to do that, you know, and them seeing like the pivot, them seeing the dedication, them seeing sweat tears, them seeing us sitting in this office like for hours on end I'm not laying in the bed you I mean, I'm a full-time entrepreneur.

00:31:41.071 --> 00:31:44.203
Nobody's gonna be like Kia hello, no.

00:31:44.203 --> 00:31:47.569
So that fire has to be within me.

00:31:47.569 --> 00:31:57.512
So I think they just see hard workers with us and I hope they see two people going out there and chase their dream, you know.

00:31:57.512 --> 00:32:11.215
And so I wholeheartedly believe that my husband, though, he's working for somebody now that we can build the business up to where we can both be full-time entrepreneurs doing what we love and make impact.

00:32:11.215 --> 00:32:13.050
So, making an income while making an impact, I love it.

00:32:13.050 --> 00:32:14.279
I love that making an income while making an impact.

00:32:15.099 --> 00:32:15.741
So I love it.

00:32:15.741 --> 00:32:16.403
I love that.

00:32:16.403 --> 00:32:18.710
Making an income while making an impact, that's great.

00:32:18.710 --> 00:32:19.511
I love that.

00:32:19.511 --> 00:32:23.730
So one more question what do you see the future of Affirmation Dolls?

00:32:23.730 --> 00:32:25.421
What do you see that being?

00:32:25.421 --> 00:32:27.003
What is your vision?

00:32:28.807 --> 00:32:31.313
So I think the future is bright.

00:32:31.313 --> 00:33:12.489
Obviously we have been moving into like an education space where we're doing this like power hour thing onto like daycares, afterschool programs, different things like that, and we have like a curriculum that very fun, upbeat, fast paced stuff and everything kind of relates back to affirmations and so definitely doing more of that, just expanding the product line and maybe not just being dolls, just being toys, but always just staying true to what we believe, which is the affirmations, and I think you said earlier and people say it all the time like we all need affirmations.

00:33:12.900 --> 00:33:17.151
I have affirmations all around me, so um, the future is bright.

00:33:17.151 --> 00:33:26.201
I have to make sure I stay up on ai to see how ai can help me and help you yeah, um and how it can help us to like prepare our business forward.

00:33:26.762 --> 00:34:03.372
But I definitely, uh believe we'll be a multicultural toy company in the future that has multiple products, you know, speaking, and having programs that we can go and and have other people or teach, other, teach other people how to help others, because the reality is we can't touch everybody, but the people that we can touch, if we can give them some like soft skills and stuff to learn that they can go out there and, you know, do it Because we're very, very big on just like impact.

00:34:03.372 --> 00:34:09.771
Impact is big, so I definitely see our impact being great in the near future.

00:34:10.782 --> 00:34:11.465
Yeah, you covered it.

00:34:11.465 --> 00:34:27.309
You know, just expanding that product line, like right now we just have the dog right a lot of things that we could do, you know, uh, to expand our product line, because it's not uh great to have all your eggs in one basket.

00:34:27.309 --> 00:34:29.501
So you know, for entrepreneurs out there.

00:34:29.501 --> 00:34:37.427
We need to follow what I'm about to say, but have other products, you know, not just your main product, but other products to build your business.

00:34:37.567 --> 00:34:40.322
Yeah, that's true, do you have any advice for us?

00:34:40.322 --> 00:34:45.592
You are like all the doll experience and all the doll experience.

00:34:45.592 --> 00:34:46.400
Well, what?

00:34:46.460 --> 00:34:47.764
I do what I what I my.

00:34:47.764 --> 00:34:51.760
My advice to you is really just to stay strong in your vision, right?

00:34:51.760 --> 00:34:53.324
No, no matter what happens, right?

00:34:53.324 --> 00:35:00.485
Your vision is about empowering young people within the affirmation space, and you can do that.

00:35:00.485 --> 00:35:10.324
Like you said, I do think you need to probably create something else out of that doll or maybe that doll is selling books about affirmations or whatever it is.

00:35:10.324 --> 00:35:15.905
But I think those two things can definitely stay in alignment with each other and it can help you to grow differently.

00:35:15.905 --> 00:35:19.425
You could talk about hey, you know, my doll reads affirmations.

00:35:19.425 --> 00:35:20.389
How does she read them?

00:35:20.389 --> 00:35:24.585
She has her own book, her own set of cards, her own this or that.

00:35:24.585 --> 00:35:39.146
The dog can still be a main product, but because she still has a world within that space, she has a doll world and within that space she's a doll world and in her doll world she uses these things to help her feel good, coming from an expert.

00:35:39.568 --> 00:35:40.690
Well, thank you, thank you.

00:35:40.690 --> 00:35:41.650
I appreciate that.

00:35:41.650 --> 00:35:42.371
I really do.

00:35:42.371 --> 00:35:43.054
Um.

00:35:43.054 --> 00:35:53.885
